I have been creating designs for silk screening for over 25 years. T-shirt illustration is just one of my specialties. I got my start in the silk screen business as an apprentice in a small mom and pop sign shop where I assisted in creating silk screens for application on vehicles, signs, ad specialties and other products. I'm one of the few artists that I know who actually creates clip art that is screen printer-friendly. I try to keep all of my designs to a limited color palette. I use only PMS (Pantone Matching System) colors and I save all of my clip art in older versions of .eps vector format which seems to be the most application-friendly format for both Corel and Adobe Illustrator users. I like to think of myself as a "screen printer's artist" as I see the world from both the screen printer's prospective while playing the artist role. My experience from the "front end" of screen printing has really sharpened my skills as a freelance T-shirt designer. All of my creations are "screen print" ready which not only saves the printer money by virtually deleting any backend production time, but in the long run, saves the customer money as well. I design to print, that's my motto.
Keeping most of my clip art images to 2-3 colors increases your profit margin. If you're going to create a clip art image for screen print that is more than 3 colors, it is more cost effective to go with full color process CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) printing. Of course this process is usually much more expensive and not as cost-effective for the customer. The "perceived value" of a 3 color image is usually the same as with a full color piece, so why not save time and money? In addition, the nationwide trend seems to be leaning more towards simpler one and two color design. The clip art images in my Retro Clip Art Mega-Pack reflect this trend.
If you're looking for a screen print artist that's familiar with the industry and your customer demands a design that's unique and cost-effective, give me a shout! You can reach me 24/7 at my official website by clicking the "Custom Art" tab at the top of my home page: http://www.andynortnik.com
